IOF World Congress Abstracts IOF-Servier Investigator Research Fellowship awarded to Australian researcher studying racial differences in pathogenesis of bone fragility The 2002 IOF-Servier Young Investigator Research Fellowship, worth €40,000, was presented at the IOF World Congress on Osteoporosis to Dr. Yunbo Duan, University of Melbourne, Australia. Dr. Duan's project, "Are racial differences in periosteal apposition during aging responsible for the racial differences in bone fragility: Studies in Asians and Caucasians", focuses on the structural and biomechanical basis responsible for the racial differences in fracture rates between Asians and Caucasians. Duan's hypothesis is that racial differences in periosteal expansion during aging may contribute, in part, to the racial differences in bone fragility at the spine and hip. A cross-sectional study will be conducted in 500 healthy Chinese men and 500 Chinese women age ranged 18 to 85 years living in Melbourne, Australia. Duan believes that the results of this study will provide important insights into the pathogenesis of bone fragility in both racial groups just as insight into bone fragility in women has been obtained by studies in men. Dr. Duan is currently a research fellow in the Department of Endocrinology and Medicine, University of Melbourne. This IOF-Servier Young Investigator Research Fellowship is awarded to young scientists under age 40 for original research work. IOF is grateful for the generous support of the Servier Research Group which has made this fellowship possible through an unrestricted grant of €40,000 that is awarded every two years. The first IOF-Servier Fellowship was awarded in June 2000.
