Amgen, the world's largest
biotechnology company, today announced the opening of its regional
office in Dubai. All Amgen commercial operations activities in the
Middle East and Africa (MEA) will be managed from Dubai. Dubai will
now serve as a hub for expanding Amgen's commercial operations in
this region. The Middle East and Africa have a population of about
350 million people.
"Our intent is to be the biotech industry's premier player in
Middle East and Africa", said Amgen's Vice President, Ugo de
Francesco, at a press conference announcing the opening of the Dubai
office. "We want to ensure that as many patients as possible
get access to our innovative therapies that address unmet medical
needs in this part of the world. We aim at building an outstanding
management, consistent growth, and positive social and economic
impact on local and national communities and customers in this
region."
Amgen selected Dubai as the location for its Middle East and Africa
operations because it is strategically located at the crossroads of
the East and West. "Dubai is a cosmopolitan city with a
flourishing international business community and a peaceful
co-existence of all ethnic groups", said Ashraf Allam, managing
director of MEA & Turkey operations. "Therefore we look
upon Dubai as the ideal choice for our MEA activities."
Amgen provides a range of therapeutic products that are helping
millions of people around the world in the fight against cancer,
kidney disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and other serious illnesses.
The Amgen office is located in the Dubai Biotechnology and Research
Park (DuBiotech), the region's first 'free zone' dedicated to the
biotechnology industry.
"We are delighted to welcome Amgen as one of the founding
members of the DuBiotech community," said Dr. Abdulqader Al
Khayat, Executive Director of DuBiotech. "We are seeking to
partner with global biotech giants like Amgen to accelerate the
development of the industry here. Amgen's presence will enrich the
biotechnology sector in the region and contribute to its
development," he added.
DuBiotech is building an industry cluster and research hub for
biotechnology companies in Dubai. Its aim is to create a regional
center of excellence for biotechnology by bridging research,
education, and industry through national and international
collaborations.
